The spacious rooms are breezy, clean and brightly painted. The staff are friendly, the beds are comfortable, there is access to fast internet service, and the hammocks in the courtyard will surely beckon you to stay awhile. Eat an array of fresh tropical fruit from the trees there while you're at it. And it's right across from the beach and all best the beachfront restaurants.
Hostel Esperanza is safe, cheap, fun and relaxing -- a true backpacker's paradise. There's nothing more you could really ask for.

We had booked for two nights but left after the first night (and moved to Big Drop in Maderas instead). The room was very small, with insufficient space even for our small backpacks. The floor and the walls were very dirty, and there was a dead cockroach in a corner under a shelf. The kitchen was small and filthy. The restaurant was closed, either permanently or because it was low season. No atmosphere, nowhere to hang out. Didn't measure up to other hostels in the same price range.

Pros: Great location. Walk across the street and you at the beach. Beautiful sunsets. Many restuarants within a block or two. CONS: It feels more like a Appalachian cast away cottage. I can handle bare bones with a bed, and cool shower so it works for me to have the private room at this location. As far as security the private rooms have a solid wooden door with a deadbolt. Bring a towel
